Rupa Kotecha
Manjira
Ontario, CA
Rupa Kotecha first experienced seeing a traditional Gujarati folk manjira player in Vadodara in 1999. Fascinated by the rhythms and entertaining nature of the manjira, upon returning home, Rupa started playing manjira at her family’s weekly bhajans. Since then, every opportunity to join in the percussion group has been taken, and thoroughly enjoyed.
As for her musical journey- it started with learning Kathak from the late Anjani Ambegoakar. She spent 7 years taking Kathak lessons, before she expressed an interest in learning Sitar.
She learned sitar from the Late Pt. Amiya Dasgupta, followed by the late Harihar Rao and finally late Pt. Ravi Bellare. While Rupa has a passion for sitar, her career as an Emergency Room Nurse has made it challenging to devote the required attention to daily riaz.
Having been raised in the same home as Rupesh, Rupa’s love for Indian Classical Music knows no boundaries.
